Preacher Meat

Martha’s been reading the Dictionary of Smoky Mountain English again, and stumbled across a synonym for “fried chicken.” It’s preacher meat. This is part of a complete episode.

Transcript of “Preacher Meat”

Grant, do you know what preacher meat is?

Preacher meat?

Yes.

Is this like chicken served at Sundays?

Oh, how did you know?

Is it?

Yes, I’ve been reading the dictionary of Smoky Mountain English, which is one of my favorites, as you know.

I win at radio.

Yes.

Yes, I learned that preacher meat is fried chicken because it’s what you tend to serve to the preacher when he comes by.

It reminds me of the Italian pasta strozza preti, which means priest strangler, literally.

It’s a big, thick, ropey pasta, and it’s what you served up to feed the clergy because they tended to stop by at lunchtime.

That’s what I would do.

That’s what you do.
