Martha, do you remember the program where we took the call about the pronunciation of the word schedule as skedooly?
Oh, yeah. How could I forget? We got so much email about that.
Lots of email, lots of phone calls, a lot of people had some interesting stuff to say.
Reports came in from all over the country. A number of people thought it had something to do with German, although they didn’t exactly say what.
And a number of people, like Eleanor of La Mesa, California, thought it had something to do with a comedian, maybe in the 1950s or somebody who had a television show, who used that pronunciation as part of a comedy routine.
Okay, that was an intentional mispronunciation.
We weren’t able to track that down.
We weren’t able to prove that.
But if you have some information along those lines, and more than one person suggested that, we’d welcome it.
A name, who could this person have been?
Jesse called from San Diego to tell us that his grandfather started saying Skiduli during World War II when he was stationed in Burma.
And he debated with the British officers over the pronunciation of the word.
Of course, the British say schedule, and Americans tend to say schedule.
And Jesse says that his grandfather claims that they settled on Skidooly as the compromise.
So we won as opposed to Shedooly.
