Quiz Guy John Chaneski presents his “Before and After” game, in which a pair of two-word phrases overlap on a shared word. For example, what do you get if you combine a fruity pastry with a part of a man’s throat? An Adam’s apple turnover, of course. In this particular puzzle, each in-between word in the answer begins with the letter A. So if John mentions a light, fluffy, baked dessert that watches over you and protects you, what exactly is he talking about? This is part of a complete episode.

You’re listening to A Way with Words, the show about language and how we use it.
I’m Martha Barnette.
I’m grandparent, and dressed in gold lame and wearing rocket boots and a helmet about to do a stunt.
It’s our quiz guy, John Chaneski.

You might be familiar with the category.
It’s called before and after.
Does that ring any bells?
Is this a Jeopardy!
Category traditionally?
I’m unfamiliar with that show, but, it’s probably something like that.
Yeah.
I’ll give you a clue to two answers.
Both are two word phrases, and the second half of the first answer is the same as the first half of the second answer.
Okay.
So they can overlap.
For example, if I clued, it’s a fruity pastry, you might find just under a man’s chin, the answer would be, Adam’s apple turnover.
Gotcha.
Okay.
Adam’s apple, apple turnover.
I was thinking about beefcake whole, but that doesn’t work.
That’s something.
There’s something there.
I’ll work on that next time.
Now to simplify things this week, every overlap word like apple in Adam’s apple turnover will begin with A.
Okay.
Just for a thing to do.
Also, you’ll note that for language reasons, the second part will typically be clued first, like I did with this.
You’ll see what I mean.
Here we go.
It’s a light, fluffy, baked dessert that watches over and protects you in a heavenly fashion.
