Cabbies are sometimes known to stretch their hood, which means to fib to the dispatcher about their location. Sometimes they have to drive out of bounds to pick up a fare. This is part of a complete episode.
Transcript of “Stretch the Hood”
At the top of the show we talked about Randy who posted a great list of taxicab slang. Yeah, on our Facebook page. Well, he got me so excited about slang. You know that’s my thing. But I googled redundant. Yeah, I googled around for some more and I found this great blog called SoCal Cabbie from right here in San Diego.
And a few years ago, this person posted a list of cabbie slang. And the one that I really loved is called Stretching Your Hood. And short for Stretching Your Neighborhood. It’s when you lie to your dispatcher about where you are. Because you’re only supposed to service a particular area, right? Pick up calls in that area.
And yet sometimes you’re like, well, I know there’s a really hot nightclub over there. I’m going to go over there and see if I can get a fare. And so your dispatcher goes like, car 54, where are you? And you’re like, oh, yeah. I’m not where you think I am. I’m stretching the hood. Stretching the hood.
