We were talking earlier about names for hot winds, and it turns out that there are some really great names for cold winds as well, or cool winds like doctor. Have you heard the word doctor used in terms of wind? No. How does that come about as a name for a cool wind?

It’s the kind of wind that supposedly brings good health. Oh, interesting. Yeah, like a cape doctor on the South African coast, or a Fremantle doctor, which is a cooling sea breeze in Western Australia, often made note of during hot summertime cricket matches.

Interesting.

The doctor wind.

Yeah.

And there’s another one, the barber, barber wind, which is just generally applied to wind that is so cold that it’s cutting.

Oh, I see.

I thought it was so strong it took your toupee off.

Well, yeah.

Some people say it freezes on contact with objects and would take your beard off and yeah, your hair, as you say.
