“River Left” and “River Right” Work Like “Stage Left” and “Stage Right”

In whitewater rafting, river left and river right identify the banks on either side of a river from the viewpoint of someone facing downstream. Like stage left and stage right, the labels depend on a shared orientation rather than on where any one person is standing or looking. This is part of a complete episode.

You know I never thought about it but in whitewater rafting they’re the terms river left and river right. Why? Because it’s the right and left hand sides as you face downstream.

It’s sort of like stage left and stage right. Yeah, never thought about that before. Right, yeah.
