ill na na

ill na na
adj.Gloss: very good. “Ill” is old-fashioned hip-hop slang meaning good or great, “na na” is a euphemism for the vagina. Note: Probably from a 1996 Foxy Brown album Ill Na Na. «If you are an existing iPhone customer in good standing, you will be able to extend your contract for two years when the iPhone 3G launches and get the ill-na-na $199/$299 price point.» —“iPhone 3G: the details you never wanted to know” by Boy Genius The Boy Genius Report June 9, 2008. • Oh please. That is the most ridiculous example of the use of that phrase that I’ve ever seen. In the Catchwords email, if you didn’t know what it meant, ill na na would sound like garbage. Go ahead and substitute another word like “blorb” and you’ll see that the example doesn’t illuminate the usage at all.

On the other hand, equating a great price on your iPhone to “great vagina” is about as geeky as it gets. Somebody needs a girlfriend…

  • Robbie, the primary purpose of the catchwords is to record the usage, not illuminate it. It’s called a “catchword” because this is the place in which I “caught” it.
