A geographical term from the 2025 Scripps Spelling Bee: Hoofddorp, a commune in the western part of the Netherlands. This is part of a complete episode.
Transcript of “Hoofddorp”
I have to say one of my favorite new words that I’ve learned from working with spelling bee materials is the word hofdorp. Hofdorp, so this sounds German in origin.
Yes, yes, it’s a geographical name. I should have mentioned that. H-A-U-F-T-D-O-R-P? No, it’s even better than that. It’s H-O-O-F-D-D-O-R-P.
Oh, is it Dutch then? Yes, yes. Hoeftdorp is a commune on reclaimed land in the western part of the Netherlands. It translates as main village.
And I just love that that was something that I didn’t know and now I know it and it’s such a fun word to say and spell.
