Fizzy Relief Headed Your Way

Trivia time! Where in the United States can you visit Soda City?

If you answered Columbia, South Carolina, you’re right! This nickname apparently derives from an old practice of abbreviating Columbia as Cola. The locals then referred to the town as Soda City, and the bus system there is now also known as the Soda Cap Connector.

We mention this because we’ll be appearing live in Columbia at the University of South Carolina on Thursday, May 15. We hope you’ll join us!Β Get tickets today!

Martha and Grant on Stage in South Carolina May 15th! »»

Speaking of speaking, Grant just got back from Waco, Texas, after helping fundraise for the hard-working folks at KWBU-FM. Besides some great Tex-Mex food, he also enjoyedΒ a delightful interviewΒ (Martha’s adjective!) at the station with fellow word nerd Rachel Velasco.

KPBS, our home station in San Diego, has moved A Way with Words to a new time slot: Sunday mornings at 10. Tune in! They’ve also added to the schedule theΒ This Old House Radio Hour, which is a delight.

Maybe you’ve heard ofΒ that small town in WalesΒ that has what’s supposedly the longest name in the UK? That would be:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

What you may not have heard is how to pronounce it. After our conversation aboutΒ extremely short town names, listener Chioma Iheme of Valley Center, California, took it upon herself to learn more about that extremely long name and how to pronounce it.Β She recorded the resultΒ and sent it to us, and we think you’ll agree she did a darn good job.

If you want to try it yourself,Β this song is pretty helpful.

One other thing before we go: we recently made it possible for you to send text messages to our toll-free number, 877 929 9673. It’s already obvious lots of you like to listen to the radio phone in hand. Not driving, we hope.

Until next time,

β€” Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett, co-hosts and co-producers of A Way with Words, and Stefanie Levine, senior producer of A Way with Words.
