Finifugal

I came across a word that you’ll rarely hear, but I think it deserves more use.

The word is finifugal.

Finifugal. Spell that one.

It’s F-I-N-I-F-U-G-A-L. Finifugal.

Is this like the weird pronunciation and spelling of difficulty?

Like defogity?

Defogity, yeah.

Like a weird form of finally? What is it?

Well, it’s related to finally.

It comes from the Latin word finis, which means end, and fuga, which means flight.

And if you’re finifugal, then you want to avoid the end of something because you want it to go on forever.

So you might be finifugal about reading a book.

You know, you just don’t want to get to that last page.

Oh, yeah.

When you’re enjoying a book series and then you look up the next book in the series and it says, so-and-so passed on 10 years ago.

And you’re like, no.

No.

Yeah.

Well, maybe that’s another one.

You don’t want to begin that second book.

But, yeah, I find myself being more and more fine-ifugal in terms of books or TV series.

You know, I just don’t want to end.

Yeah, with the goodness to last.

I appreciate that.
