At about 2:32 in this episode, Martha speaks of grim fairy tales and says: "They still [something] me out."

What is the word she used there?

Hi, mpg! I said that they "skeeve me out." Are you familiar with that term? It's mostly heard in the Northeast, apparently from Italian "schifare," meaning "to disgust."

(And do grim fairy tales skeeve you?)

I'm not familiar with grim fairy tales
I don't keep up with the Darwin Awards either

The Darwin Awards salute the improvement of
the human genome by honoring those who
accidentally remove themselves from it...

TV news can ruin an appetite

Interesting -- I grew up in the Northeast (Boston suburbs, 1970-1990) and don't recall ever hearing it.

Martha, didn't you mean "northwest"?

Nope, Northeast. At least according to DARE.

For what it's worth, I live in the Northwest now (1990-2008) and I've not heard it up here either.

Martha's right, it's a Northeast thing. I've lived here all my life and use skeeve all the time (but not while referring to fairy tales, I like 'em!). Maybe it's more coastal than inland?

I've definitely heard it, and I grew up in the northeast.  Although if I'd had to guess, I probably would have guessed it came from California.

Oh, we can have icons now?
