Transcript of “A Haiku for Hard Work”

Here’s a haiku I really like from Sophia Barueta, who is 14 years old and she lives in Tomball, Texas, which I gather is in the Houston area. And it’s a really heartfelt haiku about her family.

Daddy works from home. Mama’s work is essential. Abwe’s stuck with us.

That’s lovely. Abwe, I guess, is her abuela?

Yes, yes. She was talking about how incredibly hard both of her parents work, and her mom is somebody who has to go into work every day, and so she commutes an hour and a half, five days a week still.

Her dad is in a management job that he can do at home, but Abwe, her abuela, is the one who’s taking care of everybody.

That was lovely, Martha. Thank you.

Yeah, I think it was such a beautiful way of expressing such heartfelt sentiment.

So thank you, Sophia.
