Where does the term "Doesn't Beat the Bulldog" come from?

Anyone know where the term “that doesn't beat the bulldog” or “that doesn't feed the bulldog” came from? I have heard it in several instances, most notably on an old M*A*S*H episode. I believe BJ Hunnicut and a visiting friend was pulling pranks on each other and it went too far. His friend said “sorry” and Trapper said “sorry doesn't beat the bulldog.

Any ideas? My best guess might be that it refers to Yale's mascot, Furious Bulldog.
