U.S. Drops 'War on Terror' Phrase, Clinton Says. "Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the Obama administration has stopped using "war on terror," breaking with the Bush administration's terminology in describing the conflict with al Qaeda and militant Islam."

I have always wondered why the phrase 'War on....' is so often used in the US. I don't see European, or other nations for that matter, using the phrase 'War on ...' to face the problems that are so common in every society. What is the fascination with turning everything into a war in US English?

War on Poverty (LJB)
War on Drugs
War on Terror
War on Condoms (NY Times 2003 on Bush supporters)
War on Greed
War on Christmas (Fox News Bill O'Reilly)
War on ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease)
War on Guns
War on Global Warming
War on Cancer (Nixon 1971)
War on Bugs (Discovery News)

Etc etc.

Stoppel, good question. But what kind of phrase does the Dutch government use when talking about such things?

A few that I remember are

De kater komt later (The hangover comes later) campaign against alcohol abuse

De kater komt later

De kater komt later

Elk weekend hetzelfde uitzicht (Every weekend the same view) campaign against alcohol abuse.

Every weekend the same view

Drank maakt meer kapot dan je lief is (Booze destroys more than you care for)

Kom op tegen kanker (Come on against cancer) Belgian cancer awareness campaign.

Laat naar je borsten kijken (Show your breasts) Belgian breast cancer campaign.

Breast cancer campaign

Around the world against cancer

Sla kanker de wereld uit (Knock cancer out of this world)

Stop borstkanker, geef voor onderzoek (Stop breastcancer, give for research)

Just a few slogans I remember from the past. No mention of wars....perhaps Europeans think that war is a scary thing.
