Someone inside a car?

Until we have fully automatic cars there, the person in the driver's seat is the driver while everyone else is a passenger or perhaps a 'rider'.   Rider is better suited for someone on motorcycles and mopeds for the obvious reasons but it's been gaining traction due to the rise of ridesharing.

So, with the driverless future in mind, what is a word (or phrase?) to describe someone inside a vehicle without a referring to their capacity (e.g. rider, driver)?

Cheers
