Apparently the pronunciation of calliope as cally-oap was still prominent as late as the early 1920s. An old recording called "Santa Claus Hides In The Phonograph", performed by Ernest Hare (half of "The Happiness Boys") has Santa telling the kids that he's hiding inside the record player because he doesn't want to be seen covered with soot from all the chimneys he's had to go down on Christmas Eve. Once Santa has explained his situation, he demonstrates some of the toys he has with him, complete with sound effects, including a toy train and "a toy cally-oap".

Like the teens I overheard discussing Harry Potter and "HER-mee-own".
