Listening to NPR talking about politics, it was driving me crazy, with their calk about evangelicals.

They were pronouncing it like e-vangelicals, as if they were internet-ish, rather than ev-vangelical.  Dictionary.com lists both pronunciations, and gives the NPR one first, but to me, it sound like someone is making fun of Southerners, with their EEEEectricicle lights and their CEE-ment ponds.  Or, for Pogo fans, like SEE-gars.

Has the pronunciation of evangelicals changed in recent years, like the Cuh-RIB-be-un has become the CARE-uh-be-un?  Or is   this just another sign of encroaching senility?

Your memory must be something to know any other than the one.  Actually I am curious to hear the 'ev'  from YouTube or such-likes.

Nope, deaconB, no changes, nobody poking fun. The pronunciations you find peculiar are the ones I grew up with, 1950s – '60s, rural New York.
