New Function Words?

Howdy all,

I finally have a reason to delurk! A younger friend presented me with a question from a recent exam. It's been longer than I'd like to admit since I've daydreamed in an actual classroom, and the question has me stumped. Can anybody help us?

Here's the $64 query.

What is the technical term for the development of new inflections and function words from formal lexical expressions?

Esoxer, if I understand what you're asking, it's usually called "lexical innovation" or just "innovation."

But I'm not sure what you mean by "formal lexical expressions." Will you elaborate?

BTW, what is the meaning of delurk?

Delurk is making yourself known in a web-based virtual community. Delurk was predeeded by Lurk which means to participate only passively in a virtual community, without making your presence known.
