Names for types of farms

I've been asked to figure out whether there are "proper" (maybe Latin?) names for different types of farms, specifically, farms that produce crops and farms that raise livestock.

It seems like something there might be more eloquent terms for, but I'm unable to find anything other than "crop farm", "ranch", "dairy farm", etc. Any ideas would be most welcome - thank you!

Hmmm, interesting question, Emma! Whatever inspired it?

"Dirt farm" might be one but only because I have heard "dirt farmers" before, maybe in a derogatory sense. It is all "agriculture" which may have an etymology that Emma is looking for.

By the way, most of us farmers probably don't care if we have an eloquent or "proper" name or not.

In my farming endeavors, I'm mostly a rancher but I have planted crops before. The big thing about farming in the Ozarks is being diversified (now there is a four-dollar word :-).

I'm a library technician at a law firm; one of the lawyers wanted to know, and I don't want to let him down!

An agronomic enterprise might be equivalent to a crop farm.

Thesaurus.com lists all sorts of things.

BTW
Q: How many lawyers does it take to grease a combine?

A: Three, but you have to run them through real slow.

Well, Emma, just for fun, I tried doing a couple of reverse searches in the online Oxford English Dictionary, using its nifty search engine to look for words with "farm" in their etymologies, just to see if that would help. I really didn't find much, although I'm delighted to learn that "pecudiculture" is "the rearing of cattle or other farm animals." (And yes, I'm well aware that what delights me and what delights most other people may be very different. Oh well!) 🙂

This is probably not exactly what you're looking for but Wikipedia has articles on the following different types of farming:
Collective farming
Factory farming
Fell farming
Intensive farming
Organic farming
Vertical farming
And, yeah, best of luck! 🙂
