From the AWWW e-mail entitled "Coursers They Came":

• What's the smelling equivalent of "in sight" (close enough to see), "in earshot" (close enough to hear), and "in reach" (close enough to touch)? The community at Metafilter tries to fill this linguistic gap.

My thoughts quickly turned to bloodhounds and scent tracking. In that field they use "in the scent trail" for this concept.

"Within scent of" is the phrase I've seen in use for many years.
