Book recommended . . . "My Name is ???"

A recent Way With Words show ended with a recommended book reading, and Martha shared that she had recently read a book by a Latino author I don't recall, and the name of the book was something like “My Name is (a biblical-sounding name)”. My curiousity was piqued by her comment that the very last word of the book changed her whole perception of the story. I've looked under Latino authors such as Castaneda and Borges to no avail. Now, of course, I'm obsessing about finding this book. Anyone remember the name of this book??

I remember that episode, too, and wishing I knew the author. I agree it sounded like "boor-hees," so I think you're right there. It was a short story, though, so we might need a book name in order to find it.

Martha, we're calling Book 4-1-1. Do you copy?

I'll chime in here for Martha (and hope I remember it correctly): The author was Jorge Luis Borges and I believe the title was "The Gospel According to Mark." You can find it in Collected Fictions.

10-4, Pam. I copy. And yes, Grant has it right -- it's by the great Argentinian writer Borges. I'll be interested to know what other people think of that story, so please let us know!

And yes, it's the Andrew Hurley translation. I haven't read it in Spanish, and I don't know how other translators have rendered the last line in English, although I suspect they'd end it with the same word.

Ah ha, so it was Borges! I see where I got the "biblical" part of the story name. Thanks all for your help identifying this book - I'm looking forward to finding and readig it. Anticipation . . .

Well, do let me know what you think. I'm starting to worry that I was just too dense to figure out what the last word would be!
