H. Allen Smith, tells a story in (I think) "Life in a Putty Knife Factory" tells a story from the '40s in New York of a spectator at a baseball game (probably the Dodgers). The star of the team was named Hoyt. He was injured by a line drive, and a fan yelled, "Holy jeez, Hurt's hoyt!"
