I have heard this used by Americans several times recently in the media. I always thought it was a British version of the American "right on." I gather the uses want to sound more sophisticated and avoid coming off as aging hippies. Any American out there now using "spot on" for "exactly"?

I have, for almost 20 years. In college, I had a good friend from England. He introduced me to the phrase and I've used it since.

Sure. I use it from time to time, but I do in my regular American accent, like spa dawn.
