spic and span

the other day I was watching a cartoon program with my three year old granddaughter and the expression "spic and span" was used. I got to thinking about it. This is not a word like Kleenex or Fridigare which denotes an object. I am sure the product name came much after the expression. Can you tell me where it came from?
