Oh! Having posted the thread, I came up with the meaning. Now I just leave it as a simple riddle.

I've heard that as a friend-of-a-friend story several times. A student in a debate class or club is asked to prepare to argue a position for or against euthanasia. He comes prepared with statistics and stories about young people in Asia.
Bob: I didn't get it either ... at first. But suspecting it was a play on words, I pronounced it aloud and immediately "heard" the solution. I've run into several puns where, unless I actually spoke them, I didn't get the joke. Funny how the brain/eye/ear works that way.
