One more question on "pallet": My mother used to say, jocularly, "Methodist pallet" when she was offering someone an improvised place to sleep--"Stay and have another drink--we can always fix you a Methodist pallet." She was born 1918 in California and was not Methodist (her father was a Kentucky Baptist, and her mother a Chicago Presbyterian). Does it relate to itinerant Methodist preachers being put up in congregants' homes?
