I work in a university and we are perplexed about the heavy usage of the word “within” in student papers. We are seeing a trend in which students are heavily using the word “within” when the appropriate word should be “in.” For example, students are saying “I had a internship within Indianapolis” when the proper usage would be “I had an internship in Indianapolis.” Our question is this: Has there been a change in the usage of the word “within” and can someone explain the increase in its popularity, especially with the millennial generation?
