I have always heard the phrase "no good deed goes unnoticed" But recently I have heard people say "No good deed goes unpunished". I had never heard that before and I think it is very negative. Is this the case? How long have those phrases been around?
It is cynical, because it does reflect the truth about the way of the world. But it can also mean that if you are committed to doing good anyway, then don't feel so bad about unfair criticism.
I've heard them since I heard anything.
I've only ever heard the unpunished version of the phrase.
What do you read out of this?
