If you're renovating a house for example, suddenly a whole slew of new words muscles its way into your vocabulary, such as backsplash, shoe molding, quarter-sawn oak, sconce, grout, and bullnose. Oh my God! I am so familiar with this. I am a Spanish-speaker from Puerto Rico and when I was a kid, I used to watch a TV program from Mexico called El Chavo del 8. At that moment I was not aware of how many words I learned that are not used in Puerto Rico. For example: agotar, agujetas, coche, chabacanos, chirimoya, balón, aventar... and list continues on and on.
