I have used the word "invite" as a noun and have been corrected by a friend.   She encouraged me to use the word "invitation." This is obviously correct. Is using the word "invite" as a noun completely incorrect?   Is there some gray area?

This use is growing more and more common and more and more accepted. See another discussion here:
invite vs. invitation

In all formal settings, I would still use invitation. I might make an exception when talking about electronic forms of invitation.
