I think the origins are likely to be in "hawks" something. Hawks are raptors, from the latin root word to grab. If someone hawks something, they grab it like a hawk.

My source says it's "first recorded 1859 in American English as in hock, which meant both 'in debt' and 'in prison', from the Dutch hok 'jail, pen, doghouse, hutch, hovel'. Β The verb is 1878, from the noun."
