I never heard the front passenger seat called shotgun until I moved to Texas. I wondered what people were talking about. I suppose it originated the horse and wagon days: one person drove and the other held the shotgun ready. During my childhood we just said, "I get to be in front." I have heard of dibs, but not hox.

More specifically, it was probably during stagecoach travel, especially when the stagecoach was carrying a shipment of gold or payroll (at least according to the old movies).
