My father always said it as three word, dad gum it, except that sometimes he said dad blame it.
It is, of course, a "cleaner" version of god damn it, and if they can'y agree wjeher it's god damn it, goddamnit, goddamit, or what, it's futile thyiny to come up with ab "official" alternative.
In books, it's mostly quoting oral english, and just as one might refer to learning the gazintas - you know, 3 guzinita 6 2 times?, whether you make it one word or three, whether letters are doubled or not, has something to do with how the person is quiety fuming, or is tear-off-the-shingles fuming with rage.
Or not. You own this language as much as anyone else. and this forum is mostly descriptionists, not prescriptionists. Decide for yourself!
