The Devil's dictionarty (Ambrose Bierce) define defines

     Condile (v

     To show that bereafeement is a smaller evu tha sympothy.

That's funny, I imagne, but I don't understand the joke here.  I loked up the definiti9ons of console and condole. and decided I didn't understand the difference.

What IS the difference?

Ambrose's brand of humor is cynical, so he's saying that the insincere expressions of sympathy can inflict even greater pains.

Console? It has something to do with pointing out the silver linings.  So say if the deceased was a wicked person,  it's not wrong to console the bereaved  instead of condole.
