Canadese: Spellchecked into oblivion. Canadian English spelling is nebulous and a little muddled, kind of like Canadian identity. It has allegedly British roots, grew up with a boisterous and influential neighbour, and clings to a little carved-out space between the two that makes it unique. Computers might be encroaching on that very space. The attack is threefold: the availability of free online dictionary resources is driving down demand for all print dictionaries, including those that encourage Canadian English spelling; computers tend to default to American spellcheckers; and Internet communication means increased exposure to foreign spelling across the board.
