A McGuffin appears to be a present given long before Christmas, not to be opened until Christmas.Β Given that hint at Dictionary.com, I found a rather interesting thread about an imaginary mongoose in an earlier version of Hitchcock's story.
Don't stop with just this post; the replies are fascinating as well. http://listserv.linguistlist.org/pipermail/ads-l/2010-October/103770.html
Still no explanation as to how Hitchcock came to call it a McGuffin, though.
