During your discussion of Australia/Austria, I couldn't help thingking of the Simpsons episode "Bart Goes to Australia" in which facade of the Australian Parliment building has "Parliament-haus der Austria" carved in stone with a claret showing that a written "al" should be inserted after the "r" in Austria.
