I would appreciate some input on the use of the word agreeance.
Is it a word?
Is it just poor english?
Is it simply out of date?
Was it replaced by "agreement" at some point?
Citations would be helpful as I am trying to settle an argument.
Thanks!
Bonnie
The OED lists it as obsolete, and defines as follows:
The act of agreeing; = AGREEMENT in several of its meanings.
But perhaps it is making a comeback.
It appears to be popular in online agreement wording. The unlikelihood of anyone reading all of that gobbledegook makes it easy to perpetuate an otherwise obsolete word.
For citation, I can give you dictionary.com, although I think they might have left off the "bastardization" part.
agreeance at dictionary.com
Usage: considered obsolete and a bastardization of 'agreement'
Probably another inadvertent portmanteau: in agreement/in accordance yields "in agreeance." Personally, I find it to be an agreegious faux pas.
