What's in a Name? Sometimes, A Job. Mark Peters writes about names that are relevant to the job the person holds, like the brilliant professor of genetics, Dr. Murray Brilliant or the newscaster William Headline. We've also talked about these here and on this episode.

I don't know why this topic keeps coming up, but I'll add a couple of data points.

My father and grandfather were plumbers.

Oh, so many. Where to begin? These are two of the best in my personal experience. Sadly, they are homophones, and not spelled ideally.

While news of bonuses might mitigate the aptness, if you were not part of the elite few, it was very apt. The Head of Human Resources (think compensation) for Merrill Lynch for many years has been Peter Stingi (pronounced just like “stingy”).

Our high-school psychologist was named Dr. Panek (pronounced just like “panic”).

I once knew a doctor who was named "Dr. Blood".

I knew a Dr Zahn, in Germany no less, who was a dentist (Zahn being German for tooth).

The CBC for a time had a TV reporter named Michelle Welligan. I seem to remember she had the health desk for a brief period.
