Who gives this bride?

I find it ironic that in the a show discussing the proper response to the the above question that there was also a prickly discussion of following a husband.

The question in the marriage vows presumes a social condition where the bride was the property of her father (with a nod to the mother) which was about to be transferred to the imminent husband.

Since that state of society no longer exists, I simply ask, "Who brings their blessing to this wedding on this day?" All members of the family are invited to respond, "We Do." This phrase is far less grammatically controversial and far less insulting to the bride.

I also never ask if anyone objects to the wedding, unless I am informed of an agreement about dowry.
