What would be the proper usage for the phrase "pigeon-hole". My brother is attempting, after many years of no contact, to tell me who I am. If I said he should not "pigeon-hole" me, would that make sense to this ego-maniac? He does not know me and I want to convey the sense that he cannot categorize me. If this is an inappropriate phrase correct, please tell me the right one!
Thanks!
The term pigeon-hole (as a verb) is indeed appropriate. It means exactly what you want to convey. The online dictionary lists the following as synonyms:
classify, label, characterize, categorize, catalogue, codify, compartmentalize, ghettoize
So any of those could be useful when you next speak with him. Not sure about that last one though. Good luck asserting your uncategorizability!
