The enormity of it all

Building off an earlier post here about words that change meaning, I've frequently heard the word enormity thrown around in interviews, and even in some articles in which the writer should've known better. Has the meaning of the word enormity changed to the point that it's synonymous with the word enormousness (or any of its synonyms)?

I understand why people would gravitate to the word enormity in these cases; it's pithier, and it sounds better (maybe). But the former enormity means grand and abominable wickedness -- the enormity of Hitler's Final Solution, for example. I always thought that enormity was basically the superlative for "evil" -- far better than simply saying "evil, most, most evil." I feel that that meaning should not perish. Any agreement?

Oh, I agree, absolutely, but…good luck.
