Speaking of mute ...

Something I've noticed at our office is how people on phone conferences will "put me on mute." While I understand perfectly, it strikes me as an odd phrase. It is not ME they are putting on mute, but THEMSELVES. It makes more sense for someone to say that they are putting their phone on mute -- I sometimes hear this said -- or that they are putting themselves on mute -- I never hear this said.

What do you hear as people's last words before they go mute?

I seldom hear that expression. What I get more than anything else is "I'm gonna put you on hold."

Hold is different from mute, of course.

I don't expect oral rigor in such circumstances, but for what it's worth I don't think I've heard people say they're going to put me on mute.   More often I hear a long pause, followed by "oh, sorry, I was on mute", which reflects what Glenn wanted.
