On more than one occasion I've tried to introduce the Gaelic word "gralloch" to my programming colleagues. It seems to describe perfectly the frequent practice of tearing a program into tiny pieces to find out why it's not doing what it's supposed to do.

The literal meaning is "to disembowel a stag".
