Profanity Bleeps Physical Pain. «A study in the journal NeuroReport finds that using socially unacceptable "swear words" has physical effects that enable the swearer to tolerate pain better. » Includes audio.
This is completely plausible, but I have a related theory: This "trick" works better for people who don't routinely swear. If a person swears sparingly, then the words will have a stronger effect when used (like drugs). And actually, that is my argument against routine swearing: What words are you going to use when you're really mad or hurt?
