Hey foodies: Does the place that makes vinegar have a specific name? My friend is a microbrewer and is incorporating the making of vinegar into his new brewery/restaurant. We were wondering if a specific name described the place where people make vinegar similar to "brewery" for beer and "winery" for wine.
Hmm. I don't know any single English word. A lot of folks seem to settle on the phrase "vinegar brewery."
If you don't mind going with the French, le vinaigrier (vee-nay-gree-yay) is the French word for the person who makes vinegar, and especially the vessel in which vinegar is made. La vinaigrerie (vee-nay-gruh-ree) is the art of making vinegar or a place where vinegar is made.
I would go with Vinaigrerie or La vinaigrerie.
I sort of like the ring of Buster's Brewery and Vinairgrerie. Of course, if you must, you could substitute whatever name before brewery. But tell your friend to consider changing his or her name to Buster.
Look on the positive side: if nobody here knows the word, you are free to get in there and make up your own word, and be as authortative as you please! Look at the fun Batman has making up the names for his stuff!
Nobody will be able to gainsay you either: the vinegarage, the vinegaratory, the vinegarator, the vinegarret…
“Oh yes, we always viegarate in the vinegarage, after the vinegarret proved to be too small, and since we installed the Vinegarator 2000XL, well production has gone through the roof…!â€
