Phrase "Shut Up"

I've read the Urban Dictionary & Wikipedia page for the phrase but I'm looking for when it became common vernacular to tell another person to "Shut up!"

They used it in BBC's "Downton Abbey" which takes place 1912-1914

And when would a woman start using that phrase -- especially towards a man?
