He asked us to keep him informed of how everything was going

What is the function of 'of' in the first sentence - is it even needed?
Is "about" in the third sentence correct?

First, welcome.

In my use, without pronouncing hard and fast rules, I would tend to use informed of for more descrete, isolated facts (e.g. ETA, the cost, invited guests), and use informed about for more complex topics or broader subjects (e.g. travel plans, a project, a reception).

To me the informed how seems jarring or clipped. I might hear or say it, but I doubt I would write it.
