These phrases (as well as others such as, half [ten], garage - stress on first syllable rather than second, & who knows how many others)... are still - in the large, wide-spread environment of my family/family friends - completely "layman" phrases/terms. Amongst the young AND old(er) generations.
Not dying out anytime too soon... I hope!
Everyone from the youngest (maybe 6 & 8 years old now), to the tweens & teens, 20-, 30-, 40-, etc, somethings, to my mid-70s parents, aunts, uncles, etc, etc, etc...
Yes, very Irish (& English) family. Those of us in my generation (of this fam/fam friend community) that have grown up here in the states, are first-generation Irish-American. But every one of us understand such communications! (perhaps survival instinct!!).
But don"t sign "us" off!!!
Those phrases go right along with "...a good craic!" (which I"m sure you both know is pronounced "crack"!). "...go for a pint." - does not necessarily mean everyone will drink at least one pint of beer, & is certainly not synonymous with a "Guinness"! (although my preference is a real pint of a well-poured Guinness!!
