If 'francophile' means an admirer of everything French what does 'francophobe' mean? Because the root of 'phobia' comes from the Greek and means fear, and by analogy with acrophobia and agoraphobia, it seems that it should mean a fear of everything French. So, what then is the word that means a hatred of everything French? There is a big difference between a fear of something and a hatred of it.

P.S., This is not just limited to the French. It applies to all phile/phobe combinations.

Your argument makes complete sense to me -- there seems a difference between fear and hate (there could be a psychological question here as to whether those are, in fact, different emotions, but, since they are different words, let's say that they are). The suffix "-phobe", however, denotes either "fear of" or "hate of" (or "aversion to" or "dislike of," whatever; sometimes it is not necessarily as strong as hate).

The corresponding Greek word for "hate" is "misein", but it's not often used as the second part of a compound in English. You do see it as the first part of such words as "misanthrope" and "misogynist".

I'm with tunawrites that we use the word meaning "fear" instead. Presumably what matters is describing what one tries to avoid; whether that's because of fear or hatred is more or less irrelevant.

So, alweiss, to put together what I said above and what Ron Draney said, since there is no word "misfranco" that would more explicitly mean "one who hates France or things French," Francophobe probably will have to do. And, as Ron said, it's about avoiding the thing; if the difference between hate and fear is important, then that should probably just be said explicitly (e.g., "I'm a Francophobe — it's not just that I fear French people; I actually detest them." (not my sentiments, but just as an example)).

By the way, in my post above I incorrectly correlated the suffix "-phobe" to "fear of" or "hate of," but the suffix "-phobe" actually denotes "one who fears" or "one who hates" that which the root word represents. The suffix "-phobia" means "fear of" or "hate of." Just wanted to correct myself.

What's with this spam that's starting to pop up around the forum? Sure, I can (and do) ignore it, but it's starting to bug me. You see a reply to an interesting thread, and it's nothing more than spam. Probably impossible to prevent. Do they really think we're gonna click on those links and purchase something?

There is a "Report Post" button above every posting. I have been using it and the bad posts are often quickly removed.

It works so well, in fact, that I have never felt the need to post to a topic about the bad post.

Emmett

PS The post about cowboy boots has been reported.

Emmett: As you can see, this is only my 23rd post. Still learning my way around WWW. Will use the "Report Post" button in the future. Thanks for the tip.
